National Penghu University of Science and Technology was formerly known as National Kaohsiung Maritime Technical College Penghu Branch. Founded in 1991, it formally became independent and was established as the National Penghu Maritime and Management College in 1995; transformed into National Penghu Institute of Technology in 2000; and was renamed the National Penghu University of Science and Technology in 2005. The university is divided into three colleges: the College of Humanities and Management, College of Tourism and Leisure, and College of Marine Resources and Engineering. There are 12 departments overall, 5 Master Programs, and a Committee of General Education at the university. It is the first university in the Taiwan Strait and the only university of science and technology on an outlying island. The University cultivates a variety of talents in the fishing industry, tourism and leisure, science and technology, and management for Taiwan. It not only provides training opportunities for local talent in Penghu, but also reduces the educational gap between Penghu and the rest of Taiwan, and directly contributes to the enhancement of local industries, economy, and culture.
- 1991
Penghu Branch of Kaohsiung Maritime Technical College was established, and the Division of Aquaculture and the Division of Shipping and Transportation Management were set up.
- 1992
The night school of the two-year junior college program of the Division of Shipping and Transportation Management was added.
- 1993
The Division of Tourism Business and the night school of the two-year junior college program of and the Division of Aquaculture were added. The Administrative and Teaching Building was officially opened.
- 1994
The Division of Information Management and the Division of Electronic Communication were added.
- 1995
Formally established as an independent institution under the name National Penghu Maritime and Management College.
- 1998
The Division of Computer Science and Information Engineering was added and the Laboratory Building was completed and opened.
- 1999
The Division of Tourism Business was disbanded, and the Division of Leisure Business Management, the Division of Hospitality Management, and the Division of Applied Foreign Languages were established.
- 2000
Reorganized into the National Penghu Institute of Technology. The Library and Information Building was completed and opened.
- 2002
The Department of Tourism, the Department of Transportation and Logistics Management, the Department of Electronic Engineering, and the Department of Food Science were added.
- 2003
The Department of Aquaculture, the Continuing Education Department of the two-year technical program of the Department of Shipping & Transportation Management, and the night school of the two-year junior college program of the Division of Leisure Business Management were added.
- 2004
The Department of Marine Sports and Management, the Department of Leisure Business Management, and the Continuing Education Department of the four-year technical program of the Department of Information Management were added. The Department of Aquaculture, the Department of Shipping and Transportation Management, and the night school of the two-year junior college program of the Department of Leisure Business Management stopped admitting students. The Gymnasium and Student Activity Center was completed and opened.
- 2005
Renamed as National Penghu University of Science and Technology. The Graduate Institute of Service Industry Management and the night school of the two-year junior college program of the Division of Aquaculture were added. The Continuing Education Department of the two-year technical program of the Department of Aquaculture stopped admitting students. The Department of Electronic Engineering was renamed the Department of Electrical Engineering. The Department of Transportation and Logistics Management was renamed the Department of Marketing and Logistics Management.
- 2006
The Department of Tourism stopped admitting students and was merged with the Department of Leisure Business Management to become the Leisure and Tourism Groups under the Department of Tourism and Leisure. The Department of Marine Sports and Management was renamed the Department of Marine Sports and Recreation. The Graduate Institute of Marine Creative Industries was added. The Continuing Education Department of the two-year technical program of the Department of Shipping and Transportation Management stopped admitting students.
- 2007
The Graduate Institute of Tourism and Leisure Management was added. The Education Building was completed and opened.
- 2008
The Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the in-service education program of the Graduate Institute of Service Industry Management, and the Graduate Institute of Food Science were added.
- 2009
The four-year joint industry-academia information management technical program was added. The Department of Tourism and Leisure, which originally enrolled students in two separate groups for tourism and leisure, became the Department of Tourism and Leisure, with two classes and no group division.
- 2011
The Graduate Institute of Marine Creative Industries was renamed the Graduate Institute of Aquatic Bio-resources and Aquaculture in Aquaculture.
- 2012
The in-service education program of the Graduate Institute of Tourism and Leisure Management was added. The Marine Science and Technology Building was completed and opened.
- 2013
The students of the four-year joint industry-academia information management technical program graduated in June. The Graduate Institute of Aquatic Resources and Aquaculture was merged into the Department of Aquaculture, forming the Master Program of Aquatic Resources and Aquaculture under the Department of Aquaculture. The Graduate Institute of Food Science was merged into the Department of Food Science, forming the Master Program of Department of Food Science.
- 2014
The night school of the two-year junior college program of the Division of Aquaculture stopped admitting students.
- 2015
The second-year students of the night school of the Division of Aquaculture graduated in June. The Graduate Institute of Business Management in Service Industry was merged into the Department of Marketing and Logistics Management, forming the Master Program of Service Industry Management in Department of Marketing and Logistics Management. The Graduate Institute of Tourism and Leisure Business Management was merged into the Department of Tourism and Leisure, forming the Master Program of Tourism and Leisure Department. The Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was merged into the Department of Electrical Engineering, forming the Master Program of Electrical and Information Engineering in Department of Electrical Engineering.
- 2016
The Department of Marine Sports and Recreation was renamed the Department of Marine Recreation.
- 2018
The Five-year Junior College of Electrical Engineering Department was added.
